About Ed Snowden
Edward Snowden was born on 21 June 1983 in Elizabeth
City, North Carolina. His full name is Edward Joseph Snowden. His grandfather, Edward J. Barrett was a previous Admiral
in the US Coast Guard who became a senior officer with the FBI and was at the
Pentagon in 2001 during the September 11 attacks. Snowden's father Lonnie was
also an officer in the Coast Guard, and his mother Elizabeth is a clerk in the
US District Court for the District of Maryland.
His sister, Jessica, was a legal advisor at the Federal
Judicial Center in Washington, D.C. Edward Snowden said he hoped to work for
the federal government, as did the rest of his family. His parents divorced in
2001, and his father remarried. Snowden scored 145 on two separate IQ tests.
Edward Snowden education
In the early 1990s, while still in grade school, Snowden
moved with his family to the area of Fort Mead, Maryland. Mononucleosis caused
him to miss high school for about nine months. Instead of returning to school,
he passed the GED test and took classes at Anne Arundel Community College.
Although Snowden had no bachelor's college degree, he worked online toward a
master's degree at Liverpool University in England in 2011.
Edward Snowden dropped out of high school and studied
computers at Annie Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland (from 1999 to
2001, and then from 2004 to 2005). Between his stints at community college,
Snowdon spent four months in the Special Forces training in the Army Reserve
from May to September 2004 but did not complete his training. Snowden told the
Guardian that he was "discharged from the military after breaking both
legs in a training accident." However, an unclassified report published by
the House Intelligence Committee on September 15, 2016, rejected his claim,
saying: "He claimed to have given up basic training to the military
because of broken legs when in fact he was due to shin splints Washed. "
During his years of IT work, Snowden had seen far-reaching
access to the NSA's everyday surveillance. While working for Booz Allen,
Snowden began copying top-secret NSA documents, producing a document on practices
he found offensive and disturbing. The documents contained vast information on
the NSA's domestic surveillance practices.
In May 2013, Snowden told his bosses that he needed to take
a medical leave of absence to deal with recently diagnosed epilepsy. On May 20,
2013, Snowden moved to Hong Kong and forced himself to arrive. Snowden served
in various roles within the US intelligence community, including undercover
service to the CIA overseas. He most recently worked as an infrastructure
analyst at the NSA through a Boost Allen Hamilton contract at NOS when he left
his home and family in Hawaii to blow the whistle in May 2013.
After NSA Edward Snowden visit to Hong Kong, Snowden disclosed to the
American public the documents the NSA's mass surveillance program showed to
operate without any public oversight and outside the boundaries of the US
Constitution. The US government has charged Snowden with theft of government
property and two more charges under the Espionage Act of 1917. Each charge
carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
